The sill-height lattice window (kan chuang) is a type of partition window composed of several folding panels joined by hinges, allowing them to open inward. It is set above the "dwarf wall", together spanning the space between adjacent columns of a structure.
Regarded as a high-grade form of window, the sill-height lattice window was valued for its elegance but, due to its weight and inconvenience to operate, was mainly used in palaces, temples, and other ceremonial buildings, and was seldom used in ordinary residences.
