Lesser-known facts about Prince Kung's Palace—Stone lions

Updated: Jul 29, 2025

In front of the gate of Prince Kung's Palace stand three stone lions. Though silent and still, these finely carved lions reflect the noble status of the mansion's former owner and were believed to ward off evil and protect the household.

The male lion, with a paw resting on a brocade ball, symbolizes power and prestige. The female lion, gently restraining a playful cub, represents prosperity and a thriving lineage. The presence of the cub completes a traditional trio commonly found at the gates of princely residences and official estates, conveying the wish for endless family succession. This "one male, one female, one cub" formation beautifully embodies ancient Chinese values of inheritance, harmony, and continuity.
