On July 22, the exhibition Elegance and Style: Prince Kung's Palace and Chinese Fashion (1780-2025) opened to the public at the Jiale Hall of Prince Kung's Palace Museum, centered on the "Twelve Elegant Moments" at the palace.
As the first large-scale fashion art exhibition of Prince Kung's Palace Museum, the exhibition draws inspiration from the palace's history and culture, reinterpreting them as contemporary fashion art.
From spring flowers to winter snow, twelve symbolic scenes from Prince Kung's Palace throughout the year within its historic architecture and gardens are showcased, combining the palace's seasonal aesthetics, solar term rituals, and contemporary fashion. In collaboration with 26 prominent Chinese designers and artists, the exhibition features nearly 50 items—ranging from garments and art to home décor and handcrafted pieces, constructing a new cultural landscape where history, art, and fashion converge.
The works on view echo the Chinese designers' fashion interpretation of the essence of traditional Chinese culture. Artist Qian Lihuai’s bamboo weaving work The Howling Taihu Stone originates in ancient Chinese literati's appreciation for stones in the garden. Designer Ma Kai's Elegant Gathering in Spring Garden colors traditional cultural elements like mountains, water, spring orchids, and frost, demonstrating his profound understanding of traditional Chinese life.
Through the fusion of traditional cultural elements and contemporary design, the exhibition introduces Chinese lifestyle aesthetics and original designs to the public, reimagining the historic site of Prince Kung's Palace as a living space of Chinese aesthetic innovation.
