Prince Kung's Palace Museum, in partnership with MGM and Laurence Xu Studio, hosted the "Oriental Heritage & Rhythm of Fashion" event in Macao on Oct 20.
The event attracted almost 200 participants from the Chinese mainland and the Macao and Hong Kong SARs, including representatives from cultural organization, industry professionals and students, who gathered to celebrate the fusion of Chinese heritage and contemporary fashion.
The event opened with a panel discussion featuring renowned international fashion designer Laurence Xu, Professor Xiao Wenling from the Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University and Professor Guo Ruiping from Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology.
Together, the panelists explored the theme "Fashion Expression and Industrial Development of Intangible Cultural Heritage", discussing how traditional Chinese cultural elements inspire modern design concepts and contribute to evolving market trends. The discussion offered Macao's fashion industry a closer look at cutting-edge strategies in design, bridging tradition and innovation.
Three interactive workshops followed the discussion, providing hands-on experience in heritage crafts:
The session Deconstruction of Haute Couture: Led by Laurence Xu delved into the silhouette of haute couture garments, exploring their design styles.
Craftsmanship – Patterns and Embroidery Techniques: Masters of ICH embroidery demonstrated exquisite embroidery techniques, including Wuxi-style embroidery, French-style embroidery and bead embroidery, allowing participants to try their hands at these skills.
Style in Hair and Makeup: A live performance by professionals from Beijing and Macao showcased the artistry and process of stage makeup, captivating audiences with the intricate styles.
These workshops culminated in a fashion show featuring a collection by Laurence Xu, designed for Prince Kung's Palace Museum. The collection, incorporating Eastern and Western cultural elements, was also showcased in the 2024 Prince Kung's Palace Museum Fashion Show in Paris as part of the China-France Year of Culture and Tourism.
The event also laid on a "Greater Bay Area Fashion Industry Study Group", involving 70 fashion students from Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. This initiative offered talented young people a valuable learning and networking platform, encouraging synergy within the regional fashion industry and highlighting Macao’s potential as a diverse tourism destination.
The collaborative effort between Prince Kung's Palace Museum and MGM aims to bridge China's heritage with Macao's creative industries, fostering innovation in the modern industrialization of ICH techniques. Through this comprehensive event, the partners are advancing Macao's fashion industry and contributing to the development of its "Tourism + MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferencing and Exhibitions)" sectors.
Pansy Ho Chiu King, vice-chairperson of the China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation, chair of MGM China Holdings Ltd. and global promotion ambassador of Guizhou Qiandongnan Miao embroidery industry, noted that this collaboration has pioneered a new MICE model for Macao, integrating heritage preservation with industry practice.
Kwan Chi Ping, chairman of the Macao Productivity and Technology Transfer Center, emphasized that the event has provided Macao's fashion community with a unique platform to incorporate traditional Chinese cultural elements into innovative design concepts, inspiring fresh perspectives in fashion.
