Ventilation bricks (toufeng zhuan) are typically installed on the gable walls (side walls) and rear walls of classic Chinese buildings, with their positioned being aligned with the axis of the wall columns inside the walls supporting the roof. They serve as components designed to allow ventilation within those columns. The openwork patterns on the bricks often depict motifs of florals, eight auspicious Buddhist symbols, and other designs.
