Festoon Gate

Festoon Gate

To the north of the Vegetable Garden is the “Festoon Gate”. Its name originated from the short columns on the two sides of the door eaves, which look like flower buds hanging upside down. The gate resembles the door style of Vishnu Lou Cap in the Forbidden City.

Inside the gate is a small and exquisite quadrangle courtyard where verdant bamboos sway in the breeze and bring coolness to this quiet place. According to Redologists (experts studying Cao Xueqin’s A Dream of Red Mansions), this courtyard bears a strong resemblance to the “Xiao Xiang Guan” dwelled by Lin Daiyu, a heroine in the Chinese classic novel A Dream of Red Mansions.

The east wing of the building is named “Shelter of Fragrant Snow” and the west wing “Studio of Learning Truth”.
