Verdant Rock

Verdant Rock

There is a rockery to the north of Anshan Hall, named Verdant Rock. The Cave of Secret Cloud which stores Emperor Kangxi’s Stele of Fu is right inside the rockery. Its peak is the highest point of the Garden where a building “Pavilion of Greenness” and a platform “Moon Appreciation Terrace” for moon appreciation were built.

The rockery is composed of numerous stones from Taihu Lake. Its superb designing and exquisite piling and cementing skills are unique in the Garden. On both the east and west sides, there is a winding path to the top, and two water jars with holes are placed there at the top. The servants used to pour water into the jars, and the water would sink into rockery stones and moisten them. As a result, the rockery’s surface is covered with verdant lichens due to the high temperature and humid environment in summer and autumn. Therefore, it was given the name “Verdant Rock”. Below the Rock lies a rectangular pond the water of which used to connect with the Lake. Three groups of stones were piled up in the pond, referring to the three islands of the immortals—Penglai, Fangzhang and Yingzhou.
